About British Larch

Attractive desirable timber with beautiful colours and attractive grain make larch a wonderful timber for all exterior construction projects and garden furniture.

Heavy and strong
Larch timber is tough and dense. One of the hardest native coniferous timbers. However it is still easy to work with most hand and machine tools. It saws cleanly in most operations. Keep your tools clean and sharp for best results. Larch is used in preference when durability and strength are prime requirements

Naturally durable
Larch timber is naturally weatherproof and durable. It is a sought after timber for exterior cladding on buildings. Requires no treatment before use or after installation. It takes stain, paint and varnish well.

Weathers attractively
When sawn is a warm pink cream colour. This rapidly darkens to a reddish brown when installed and exposed to sunlight. Over time this colour darkens to a very attractive silver grey. The colour change is a result of UV light from the sun, so, shady or north facing projects will change more slowly.

Predictable performance
Larch is stable and not subject to considerable shrinkage. It experiences minimal warping.

Home grown is best
British larch is more characterful than imported Siberian larch. It has a more pronounced grain and more knots which contribute to giving it a more natural appearance rather than that of a manufactured product. Siberian larch is also available on the market, but the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) currently do not recommend its use, as it is won through deforestation rather than managed forestry resulting in irreversible ecological damage to the Siberian region. Why transport a heavy bulky product halfway around the world when its readily available here?
